Sound Cards may be integrated into the motherboard, but more often than not, they are add-on cards like the one pictured above.  Basic sound cards will have a place for your speakers (output), microphone and another line in.  The one pictured above also includes another line (jack) in or out and a serial port for a joystick.  This is a PCI card.
