Updating Windows™ Critical Updates
Need to update your Windows™ with the latest updates package? Want to know what that is?
Microsoft offers product updates for their various Windows™ releases. Often times, software packages are released and all of the "bugs" aren't worked out. These "bugs" are small problems that were either overlooked or not fixed in time for the release of the package. By following these simple steps, you can update your Windows™ package with the fixes for your particular release of Window™s (i.e. Windows™ 95, 98, 2000, ME, NT, etc.)
While connected to the Internet, type "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com" in your Internet Browser address bar. (Your browser will probably be Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.) This will take you to the main update page.
Click on the "Product Updates" link. A box will pop up, asking if you want to install and run the Microsoft Updates package. Click "yes".
A smaller window will open, telling you that it is scanning your computer for its configuration. The website is searching your hard drive to see what Microsoft programs are installed. This allows the following updates pages to be customized to your needs.
The update you will need is listed first, the Critical Updates Package. It is automatically selected. You should see "Selected Software" with "Total Size: #### KB Download Time: ## min" where # is the amount of Kilobytes (size of the file) to be downloaded and the amount of time it should take to download the updates. Click on the "Download" button and download the Critical Updates Package.
Follow the directions for installing the update.
You can return to the updates page often, to check for critical updates or other software updates. You will find updates for Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Outlook and other Internet related programs.
