On
Windows 95/98 Check for Updates
Do this by
first checking the amount of hard drive space you have left on your machine:
1.
Double Click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop
2.
When the new window opens, right mouse click on the C: drive and select
"Properties"
3.
Make sure you have at least 200MB free before continuing...
A.
Click on the following link http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
to go to the Microsoft site
B.
This site fixes many security issues in Internet Explorer, and updates your
computer for a variety of multimedia applications. You will need to
download the new Internet Explorer first (this will take a long time) for the
installs to work properly.
C.
Once the downloads are complete, close all of your programs and restart your
coputer.
Check your
computer for Y2K compliancy
1.
Go to Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt (may say Command Prompt)
2.
At the C: Prompt in the new window, type "date"
3.a
If the date comes up mm/dd/yyyy (i.e. 11/17/1999), your computer should be Y2K
compliant
3.b
If the date comes up mm/dd/yy (i.e. 11/17/99), there is a good chance that
your BIOS will not handle the date change for the year 2000.
For a more accurate check:
1.
When the computer prompts you to "Enter the new date" after typing
"date", Enter "12/31/99" and hit Enter
2.
Type the word "time" at the C: prompt
3.
Enter the time "23:55:00" and hit Enter
4.
Close all your windows and shut down your computer
5.
Wait 10 minutes and restart your computer
6.
If the computer boots with the date "01/01/2000", you are Y2K
compliant
7.
If your computer boots with the date 01/01/1900 or does not boot at all, your
machine is most likely not Y2K compliant. Call us, and we can help!
